How Many Characters are in Smash Ultimate’s Base Roster?

Super Smash Bros Ultimate has a staggering number of characters. From the game’s early days on Nintendo 64, it’s hard to believe we’d eventually end up with such a huge Ultimate roster. The most recent game began with an Everything is Here approach, but it has gone beyond that. We now have a title which might never be beaten in the series for sheer variety. Staying at the base level of the game, though, we take a look at how many characters in Smash Ultimate without DLC are actually there.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate originally launched under the tagline Everyone is here. The pitch, essentially, was the Ultimate edition of Smash Bros. It contained every character ever seen in the series. They didn’t skimp out either. Troublesome Smash characters like the Ice Climbers were back. Even picks who have rights issues that got infinitely more complicated managed to return like Solid Snake. The base roster alone is enough to keep even the most ardent fan happy for a very long time. If you’re just picking up the base, how many characters are you going to initially unlock?
