The LoL server status will dictate whether you get to go for “one last game”, or finally go and do the thing you were putting off. If you have ever tried to log in, and wondered why is League of Legends not opening, you probably encountered a server outage. In some cases, you won’t even make it any further than the Riot Client.
Riot’s servers don’t all tend to go down at the same time, so just because a friend of yours is playing VALORANT or 2XKO, League of Legends might be unavailable.
Sometimes, and we’re not just talking about in the Rift, this might just be on you. When struggling to connect to League of Legends, first check to see that your game and Riot Client are up to date.
Additionally, if the game can open, but you’re not getting past the title screen, it is worth checking for system updates. Updates may have changed your firewall access to Riot’s Vanguard, which is a required program for all Riot Games. If its all systems green-lit, and there’s nothing on your end, it is likely then that it is on Riot’s side.
One thing of note is that only individual servers may be down. As your accounts are linked to particular regions, and you cannot change region in League of Legends, if you have a secondary account for a different one, it may be worth trying logging in on that account to see if it’s only your local server that is offline.

The official League of Legends Twitter/X will have updates on whether the server is down or experiencing issues. Generally Riot communicates when their maintenance periods are, which is the most surefire way to know that the servers are down for planned reasons. However if there’s no official word, the best way to know is to see what others are saying.
