VALORANT Global Power Rankings: How The GPR System Works
The VALORANT Global Power Rankings (GPR) launched in September, finally settling the debate over which VCT teams truly stand on top. Mirroring League of Legends, the VALORANT GPR system not only highlights each team’s “Power Score,” but their win-loss record and placement at global events.
But how exactly does it work? Let’s pop the hood and take a look at how all the parts work in tandem.

What Are The VALORANT Global Power Rankings (GPR)?
At its core, the GPR is a “data-driven rankings engine powered by Amazon Web Services.” Riot Games believes it will add extra depth to the ever-present discussion of which VALORANT team is best.
Its goal is simple: to provide a snapshot of the global competitive landscape at any given time, for anyone. It’s a rating system that considers all VCT international league teams.
With a precise weighting and Power Score formula, the GPR quantifies the difference in strength per region (i.e., EMEA, Pacific, Americas, and China) and ranks all teams based on results and regional strength.
How Does VALORANT Global Power Rankings Work?
Behind the scenes, there’s an Elo system at work, combining league-specific and individual team ratings. A “Power Score” formula (more on that later) then determines each team’s place on the global standings.
Let’s take a look at the core and secondary factors that go into the VALORANT Global Power Rankings calculation to determine each team’s Power Score.
Core Ranking Factors
- Elo-Based: If Team A (higher Power Score) loses a match against Team B (lower Power Score), Team A will suffer a greater negative impact on their rating. If Team B wins, they’ll have a more significant positive impact.
- Recency Bias: To ensure an accurate representation of a team’s current form, the most recent matches played have the most significant impact on their Power Score.
- Regional Strength: 20% of teams’ Power Score is determined by their region’s aggregate performance at global events. In practice, this means a weaker region’s win over a top region team has a greater impact on the GPR.
- International Bonus: Masters and Champions match wins have a greater impact on the Power Score of teams. The effect of losses at these events, however, is slightly reduced to avoid punishing teams for participating.
- The Stakes: Match stakes matter in the GPR. An easy example is that Playoff matches of a big international event like VALORANT Champions have a more significant impact on a team’s Power Score compared to group matches.

Secondary Ranking Factors
- Performance on Defense/Attack: The GPR considers a team’s performance on both the Attacker and Defender sides, as well as the map being played. For example, a team on the Defender side of Lotus wins a bunch of rounds and subsequently gets a slight boost to Power Score due to Lotus favoring the Attacker side.
- Performance in Eco/Buy Rounds: An unexpected round win in an Eco could give a team a slight Power Score boost, especially if the enemy is on a normal Buy round. The GPR sees anything below 8,000 credits loadout value as an Eco round.
- Round Score: The GPR system considers Round Score as a secondary ranking factor, where a team winning with a dominating 13-2, for example, will get a bigger Power Score boost than a team that wins a map 13-10.
Future Ranking Factors
Riot Games aims to incorporate dynamic factors that consider the importance of a match for a team in the future. For example, Team A might have already qualified for the Champions event or a Playoffs stage of their regional league.
This means the stakes for Team A are lower than those of their opponents, Team B, whose future might hang in the balance on the results of the map. In 2026, the developer also plans to add individual player-based rankings, which will contribute to a team’s overall GPR score.
VALORANT GPR Team & League ELO Weighting
Riot Games explained that they’ve decided on an 80 Team / 20 League Elo weighting after “extensive testing with select VCT experts.” According to the developer, the Power Score formula below produces the greatest predictive accuracy.
Power Score = (x · EloTeam) + (y · EloLeague)
Note: The x represents the weight assigned to team Elo, and the y represents the weight assigned to league Elo.
How Will VALORANT GPR Tie Into Pick’Ems?
You can think of the VALORANT GPR system as a chalk outline for Pick’Em predictions. If many results do not correspond with the GPR, it could suggest an event is filled with upsets, and vice versa. There’s nothing stopping gamers from using the system as a basis for their Pick’Ems.
It is worth noting, though, that the GPR is far from perfect. Team Heretics were ranked #17 ahead of Champions Paris, while G2 Esports was ranked #1. Despite this gap, Team Heretics was considered undervalued on the GPR—and it showed after sweeping G2 Esports 2-0 and topping the Group of Death.
