How to Get Weapons in Fortnite: Loot Locations and How to Get It

Fortnite Battle Royale involves a lot of skills. You’ve got to be able to rotate properly, position yourself well, stay out of the storm, but the gunplay is the core of succeeding. Before you can even start to crack into box fights and other mechanics, you need to know how to get weapons in Fortnite.

For many this is probably an impossibly basic question. Weapons are everywhere. However, between all of the different loot locations there are some factors that new players need to be aware of. With new Fortnite patches and seasons, we get fresh places to get weapons, some of which are key for performing well in Battle Royale and potentially winning Fortnite games. This is how to get weapons in Fortnite and where has the guaranteed higher-level loot in the game.

How to Get Weapons in Fortnite

If you’re jumping into your very first Fortnite game, there’s a few things you’ll need to be aware of. The first is probably where to get weapons. There are a few basic spots where weapons spawn. However, for your very first gun they spawn on the ground, pretty much all over. You don’t have to go very far to find what Fortnite players call “floor loot”.

This floor loot is your first gun, but it’s probably going to be of a lower level than the vast majority of other loot sources. These are all the spots to grab loot in Fortnite and where weapons are found:

  • Floor loot
  • Chests
  • Special Chests (Mythic, Seasonal themed, etc)
  • Supply Drops
  • Weapon Caches
  • Shadow Briefings
  • Defeating NPCs
  • Defeating Players
  • Dropped by Players

In terms of finding fresh loot, randomly generated by the game, chests are your bread and butter. These are the containers that spawn most often. However special chests like Avengers or God Chests spawn in specific seasons too. These usually guarantee higher level items. Then there’s weapon caches and mythic chests which drop better weapons too. Supply drops can also be called in which usually drop a decent weapon and a couple of healing or utility items.

The next method for how to get weapons in Fortnite is off other players. Those on your team can give you weapons by going into their inventory and dropping them. Enemies will drop all of their inventory when you eliminate them, so you can pick items and weapons up. This applies to NPCs too, some of which drop the Fortnite Mythics once you defeat them!

How to Pick Up Fortnite Weapons

That’s where you can find weapons, but how do you pick them up? In Fortnite, there’s a simple command to pick up an item and add it to your inventory. This is how to do it on each platform:

  • PC – Interact keybind
  • Xbox – X
  • PlayStation – Square
  • Switch – Y

If you have spare slot in your inventory, it’ll go there. Although, if your inventory is full then it’ll automatically switch with whatever you have equipped at that time. If you prefer a different keybind, you can always change them. The best Fortnite settings don’t really include changing around your pick up keybind, but if there’s a personal preference it won’t hurt.

Picking up weapons and knowing where to find proper loot in Fortnite is your first step to really getting going with Battle Royale! Once you can start collecting the right guns, you can even take fights and maybe win your first round of Fortnite with the right loot and tactics.
