League of Legends WASD Movement: What we know so far

League of Legends could be getting a significant update with a new movement system, apparently to be making its way to a Summoner’s Rift near you. This has sent the League of Legends community into a frenzy. Many are by their own inability to read the leaks properly, while others are genuinely excited about the prospects the WASD movement will bring not only to the standard League, but the potential for players at the highest level in Esports.

So what do we know so far about the WASD leak? Let’s take a look. The news broke when the highly reliable SkinSpotlights profile on X (formerly Twitter) leaked that WASD movement was coming to League of Legends.

This would be a monumental change for the game; till now, League of Legends players have only been able to use the mouse to control their champions. Players did get a glimpse of what the WASD movement could look like in League of Legends. In 2024, LoL introduced a limited-time mode called Swarm, and in this mode, players moved their champions using the keyboard as opposed to their mouse. And while we and many players didn’t bat an eye at the time, it does now make sense that this could have been a tester for what was to come later down the line.

One of the interesting parts about the leak is that it says players have the option to toggle SmartCast to shoot in the direction. Could this mean that players will be able to move in one direction but face the other way, and use an ability? The number of possibilities that will be available to high-mechanical champions will be endless. And it’ll be interesting to see if professional players start transitioning to this new movement style. In the tweet, it says that the Flash summoner has three options: Cursor, WASD with Cursor Enhanced, and WASD with Cursor Fallback.

Not all players have received this news well, with many concerned that it would replace the current League of Legends movement system. SkinSpotlights responded to players in another tweet that said, “A few people didn’t look at the screenshots, you can choose between the current style “classic” mouse movement or try the “modern” WASD. You don’t need to swap or be forced to swap. I know a lot of people realize this and have other concerns, but seen too many who didn’t.”

Lastly, many have been excited about this being the first step towards controller accessibility, or even one step further, League of Legends on console. As of right now, there are no indications for League of Legends to go beyond the WASD movement and involve a controller. This article will be updated when more official information is shared on this new movement system.
