MDL Chengdu Major Dark Horses: the four big favorites

MDL Chengdu Major is scheduled to start soon after the ongoing DOTA Summit 11 and constitutes the first important event of the new Dota Pro Circuit. Here’s a brief introduction to this tournament and its potential dark horses.

MDL Chengdu Major Basic Information

MDL Chengdu Major will be held in China between November 16th – 24th and features 16 of the world’s best teams. Like every DPC Major, it offers one million dollars in prizes and 15.000 qualification points for The International 2020.

MDL Chengdu Major Dark Horses

MDL Chengdu Major has four big favorites: Evil Geniuses, Vici Gaming, TNC Predator and Team Aster. Any of these teams could win the tournament. Apart from them, there are three other competitors that you should keep an eye on.

beastcoast

The current beastcoast roster is the same one that finished 7th – 8th at The International 2019. So these guys are really good and should be regarded as one of the potential dark horses at an event like MDL Chengdu Major. And due to the fact that five of the world’s strongest teams from last season are missing from this tournament, beastcoast has an even better chance of getting a good result here. Team Secret, OG, ex-Team Liquid, Virtus.pro and PSG.LGD either declined to participate in the qualifiers or failed to qualify for the competition.

Gambit Esports

Gambit Esports was one of the big disappointments last season, when they failed to qualify for The International 2019 after getting a lot of impressive results including two Grand Final participations at DPC Minors and a 7th – 8th place at EPICENTER Major. More recently, Gambit finished 2nd at ESL One Hamburg 2019, where they nearly managed to beat one of the promising teams of the moment, TNC Predator. The final score was 2 – 3 but the point was made.

Realistically speaking, Gambit Esports is one of the best six teams at MDL Chengdu Major, in spite of not having a roster full of superstar players. Only fng and Shachlo have achieved popularity in this esport but in spite of that, Gambit’s roster is playing exceptionally well at the moment.

Alliance

Alliance won the title at the recent DreamLeague Season 12 and then finished 3rd at ESL One Hamburg 2019. The roster is made up of five veterans who have been competing at the highest level for quite some time. These are Nikobaby, Limmp, 33, Handsken and Fata. The strongest of them is no doubt Fata, who used to play for Team Liquid, Team Secret and NiP, competing in numerous Major Grand Finals with them.

With Fata as the team’s captain and position five player, the roster as a whole is in good hands and plays with great consistency. Going into MDL Chengdu Major, Alliance should be expected to get a top six finish and impress with their skills.

Fighting Pepegas

This is another team with a lot of potential. Led by Aui_2000 (former TI champion with Evil Geniuses) and having EE plus MoonMeander in key positions (carry and offlaner), Fighting Pepegas has shown a lot of skill in recent months, finishing 2nd in the NA qualifiers for this tournament. Because of this, they should also be regarded as a potential dark horse at MDL Chengdu Major.
