Why is Banana popular on Steam?

Banana is the latest craze on Steam, beating the likes of Dota 2 and PUBG in the player count lists. On the surface, this seems totally bizarre, with no discernable reason for this non-game’s popularity. So, why is Banana popular on Steam all of a sudden? We’ve got the answers.

In Banana, all you do is click a banana for eternity. Sounds boring, right? Well, it kind of is. However, every 3 and 18 hours in-game, you’ll be dropped a new banana as a reward for clicking away. These bananas can then be sold on the Steam Marketplace.

Now, most of these bananas are pretty worthless. A common banana, you could say. But there’s a little more to it. Some of these bananas are much rarer drops, with designs created by the game’s community. For some reason, individuals with too much spare disposable income have deemed that rare equals valuable, meaning that some of the rare bananas can sell in the thousands.

This obviously doesn’t explain exactly why the bananas are so expensive, nor who is actually buying them, but it does justify why Banana is popular on Steam. It’s free-to-play, so gamers are loading it up and hoping to receive a valuable drop for next to no work. I mean, why not load it up and have it running in the background? Gamers don’t lose anything by having it there, and the best-case scenario is you get an expensive banana and a nice boost to your Steam Wallet.

Of course, the rise of Banana also means that bots are farming it, too. There are undoubtedly numerous huge bot farms out there with hundreds of instances of Banana running, hoping to nab one of the expensive drops, boosting the Banana player count on Steam even further.
