The Best Mac Games To Play In 2023

Macs aren’t generally associated with video games, but they do run games. In fact, Apple’s “new day” initiative from 2022 was focused on gaming by adding: MetalFX, an upscaling program, and the Fast Resource Loading API, a feature that will decrease loading time.

By doing this, a Mac will no longer be perceived as a device that can’t operate video games. Let’s now look at some of the best games you can play on a Mac in 2023, thanks to these new features.

Portal 2

@ Valve

This sci-fi puzzle game is often considered one of the greatest video games and one of the greatest sequels of all time. The aim of the game is to break out of the Aperture research facility.

Portal 2 is a bit longer than its predecessor but takes less than 10 hours to complete and is a surprisingly comedic game despite its weighty plot. The narrative is also a bit stronger than its predecessor – it ticks nearly every box.

Hades

This rogue-lite takes you into the underworld, the realm of the Greek god, Hades. You play as Hades’ son, Zagreus – who is hoping to escape the underworld. Like most rogue-lite titles, this is a game where you’ll die plenty of times, but these deaths will serve as lessons to help your progression.

Hades takes you to various layers of the underworld, like Tartarus, as you come of age, with the Greek pantheon helping you along the way.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI

The sixth edition of the long-running franchise, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is another excellent simulation game with greater insight into the history and cultures of our world. There’s also an improved science tree and greater choice than previous titles in the franchise.

Portal 2 is a bit short, and Hades can be a bit challenging. Civilization VI is very different – you can spend weeks or months on it, and it’s easy to pick up.

Stardew Valley

@ Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is one of the best farm simulation games around. This game has a lot of warmth with charming characters, NES-inspired sprites, and soft combat. You can also go fishing, get married, discover new areas, and explore caves with monsters. This game has a calming effect on the player – it’s almost therapeutic and playing it could be considered as healthy gaming.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

The final entry in the revamped Lara Croft trilogy, this game is set in Mexico. Like most action games, this game is full of excellent set pieces. It also has the typical Tomb Raider traits: relics from the past, some high-stake combat encounters, and some excellent character-building moments for Lara Croft.
