Pokémon Scarlet and Violet introduces several new Pokémon

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are just about two months from hitting shelves and digital downloads. It’s one of the more highly anticipated releases for the franchise in recent memory. On November 9, Pokémon trainers will finally be able to explore Paldea, the ninth region.

In that region, there will be familiar faces and even some faces that look a little different (regional forms), but the exciting part is that there will be brand new creatures. In a new trailer this morning, The Pokémon Company gave a look at some of the latest Pokémon that will debut in Generation IX. Here’s what players can expect.

What new Pokémon are coming in Scarlet and Violet

For a while now, gamers have known about several of the newest creatures. The three starters, Sprigatito, Quaxly and Fuecoco are already fan favorites. The two Legendaries that roam the region are Koraidon and Miraidon. Cetitan is also coming, an Ice type known as the Terra Whale Pokemon.

Cyclizar is one of the more interesting Pokémon being introduced. It’s clearly very similar to the two Legendaries, with many theorizing it will be related in some way.

Three Dragon types

Fidough has already become a fan favorite and has a Pokédex entry that says:

“Fidough ferments things in its vicinity using the yeast in its breath. Said yeast is useful for cooking, so this Pokémon has been protected by people since long ago.”

Grafaiai, the Toxic Monkey Pokémon, is going to be one of the most colorful creatures in the franchise. Lechonk, a pig-like Pokémon, is also very popular. Pawmi, an Electric rat, is also coming. Finally, Smoliv is the last new Pokémon. Fittingly, it looks like an olive.

New trailer for Scarlet and Violet

A new trailer for Scarlet and Violet debuted this morning, giving trainers a better look at the upcoming release. It gives a good look at gameplay and, of course, introduces new Pokémon.

There are several exciting additions:

  • Klawf
  • Ceruledge
  • Armarouge

Ceruledge and Armarouge seem like two sides of the same coin, perhaps in the same way that Plusle and Minun are similar. Ceruledge is the Fire Blades Pokémon, while Armarouge is the Fire Warrior Pokémon. Both are expected to be very popular when the game releases. Klawf has unique abilities:

“Klawf can rotate its protruding eyeballs to see everything around it, eliminating all blind spots. It latches upside down onto cliffs to ambush its prey from above. However, Klawf eventually gets dizzy from the blood rushing to its head, so it can’t stay upside down too long.”

Is Pokémon Scarlet and Violet going to be any good?

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the ninth mainline game in the franchise. For much of that franchise, the game has not deviated from a successful formula. When Legends: Arceus was released, it was the first game with major gameplay changes.

Pokémon could be caught from the wild without engaging in battling. Shinies could be seen without encountering them and it was pretty open world. These are all mechanics that made the game so successful.

They’re also mechanics that will largely be present in the latest mainline release, which is the first real deviation yet. That deviation might be unusual for longtime players, but it’s a welcome change to a franchise that had gotten kind of stagnant.

The trailer only adds to the extremely high excitement level. Sword and Shield, Generation VIII, was not one of the most popular games in the franchise. Now, Pokémon seems to be back on top.

The new Pokémon introduced, liked Fidough, Sprigatito and Pawmi, are all going to be very popular. The gameplay mechanics look like a hit already. The game will even allow players to walk around with their buddy, a feature missing from most games.

The trailer introduced Treasure Hunts, which will also be brand new. Finally, it will also be a co-op game, a first for the franchise. For the first time in a long time, it looks like The Pokémon Company has an absolute hit on their hands.
