Getting ready for MSI 2022 – LoL Minor Regions Update & Spring Favorites
Aside from the major regions, the Wildcard regions will also gain representation at the 2022 Mid Season Invitational (MSI). The top team in each Playoffs in the early half of the year would earn the right to represent their region at MSI, Riot’s first global event of 2022.
While the dates of all Spring Playoffs start at different times, they all leaned mostly towards the end of March and will conclude around mid-late April.
TCL 2022 Winter Playoffs
The Istanbul Wildcats remain the favorites heading into playoffs. The team had dominated the Spring Season with two wins even against Galatasaray Esports, a powerhouse team who ranked second. Being seeded directly into the semi-finals to face Team Aurora was not biggie. IW won the match cleanly and is facing Galatasaray once again the finals.
We are likely seeing IW at MSI this year. The TCL final is set for April 9th.
PCS 2022 Spring Playoffs
With 8 teams participating in the playoffs, the PCS has the highest amount of participants in the playoffs stage compared to other wildcard regions. This is mainly due to the range of teams of the PCS coming from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and South East Asia, leading to steep competition. PSG Talon are without a doubt the favorites, having won both the Spring and Summer playoffs in 2021. PSG Talon also brought spotlight to the PCS in last year’s World Championships, placing in the upper half of the tournament. Their only contender is potentially J Team, who they already beat twice in the regular season.
LCO 2022 Split 1 Playoffs
The LCO had been completely dominated by 3 teams; Chiefs Esports Club, PEACE and Pentanet.GG. All three teams have been able to rank highly in previous years, with 2022 being no different. While the Chiefs Esports Club have the most impressive record in Split 1 by going 19-2, nothing is certain in playoffs. Both PEACE and Pentanet.GG are longtime rivals that have taken down the Chiefs before, with Pentanet.GG most recently bringing the semi-finals match against them to the full Bo5.
LJL 2022 Spring Split Playoffs
DetonatioN FocusMe are once again poised to take the LJL Spring Spit playoffs once again having already proved year on year they are the top force in the region. The team emerged victorious in the Spring Split, ending with an extremely strong 19-2 record. The only team that had been able to contest DetonatioN FocusMe were Rascal Jester, the only team that defeated them in the Spring Split. It is likely both teams will meet each other in the finals on the 10th of April.
CBLOL 2022 Split 1 Playoffs
Red Canids were able to represent Brazil in the 2021 League of Legends World championships. However, while they had finished top 3 in Split 1, it is entirely possible CBLOL will have a new top team. Red Canids lost on both occasions to FURIA Esports. Having reformed their roster at the end of 2021, FURIA Esports garnered high expectations having signed many of Brazil’s best. FURIA are a top contender for the top spot in the CBLOL 2022 Split 1 Playoffs.
LLA 2022 Opening Playoffs
Rainbow7 were initially viewed as the favorites having finish with an impeccable 13-1 run in the Opening Season. However, the team disastrously choked in the Round 1 winners bracket of the playoffs stage, dropping 0-3 to Estral Esports. While they are still in the running in the losers bracket and remain a strong contender, a mental block caused from one loss could possibly spell the end of the season for such a promising team. On the other hand, Team Aze who had dropped both games to Rainbow 7 in the Opening Season had only improved in the Opening Playoffs. Team Aze were able to win both their game in the upper bracket decisively, already having seeded themselves in the finals for playoffs.
VCS 2022 Spring Playoffs
The VCS Spring season is the latest of all wildcard regions to finish. The Spring Season is expected to conclude on the 17th of April when most others regions have almost determined their playoff champions. The VCS Spring Playoffs however will only consist of 4 teams, a shorter event which still allow a short yet sufficient time for the winner to prepare for the 2022 MSI. GAM Esports is by far the region’s top team, currently with a perfect 11-0 record and having only dropped 2 individual rounds in their various Bo3 matches.
