Niantic should add regional forms of Legendary Pokémon to Pokémon GO

Niantic hasn’t introduced all 905 Pokémon to Pokémon GO just yet. Trainers can catch 809 total Pokémon after Wimpod and others were recently introduced. That still leaves room for the nearly 100 more Pokémon still not in the game.

However, where Niantic has been successful is in introducing Legendary Pokémon. All eight generations of Pokémon are represented by at least one Legendary. When Generation IX releases later this year, the two Legendaries announced for that game, Koraidon and Miraidon, will probably make their debut in Pokémon GO as well.

Sadly, that means that the Pokémon Company will run out of Legendaries. There are still a few remaining, but those won’t last forever. For the future, it’s time to think about adding the regional forms of certain Legendaries into the rotation.

Why Pokémon GO needs regional variants for Legendary ‘Mons

Right now, trainers have seen most Legendaries in Pokémon GO. Niantic has not yet added the following:

  • Enamorus
  • Type: Null
  • Silvally
  • Solgaleo
  • Lunala
  • Necrozma
  • Eternatus
  • Kubfu
  • Urshifu
  • Cosmog
  • Cosmoem
  • Regieleki
  • Regidrago
  • Glastrier
  • Spectrier
  • Calyrex
  • Arceus

Given that Legendary Pokémon usually show up in Raids for two weeks to a month, that means there’s about 9 months left before Niantic runs out of Legendary Pokémon. That only applies if they want to add all of them. That might not be the case.

At most, they have a year and a half. That includes the allotted time for the Gen IX creatures.

Gen IX Legendary Pokémon

Koraidon and Miraidon

Niantic will likely just cycle back through them. However, most of the Legendaries have been seen recently. Rayquaza, Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde have not been in raids for a while. Players can assume those will show up soon. Dialga is coming at the end of this month, and it can be assumed Palkia will follow.

Zapdos, Moltres and Articuno from Galar

Niantic does not want to run out of Legendary Pokémon this soon. As a result, they need to consider adding regional variants of Legendaries.

Right now, there are only three regional form Legendaries: Zapdos, Moltres and Articuno have Galarian forms. Truly, it’s sad that they’re not in the game now. Their base forms are good and iconic. However, they pale in comparison to their newer forms.

Most trainers would love to see the new forms of the Legendary Birds in the mobile game. Sadly, those are the only Legendaries with regional forms.

Nintendo released Sword and Shield in 2019 and with it, the first regional Legendaries. Niantic needs to follow suit and hopefully, Scarlet and Violet will introduce even more regional Legendaries. This is a call for Niantic to add the best-looking Legendaries in the entire Pokedex. However, it’s also a call for The Pokémon Company to start doing more alternate Legendaries. Even more so if they look as good as the Galarian Legendary Birds do.

Ultimately, it’s in Niantic’s best interest to add those three. Also, it’s in the trainers best interests, too. Everyone would stand to benefit from catching new forms of current Legendaries.
