Fortnite Player Count Tanking in Chapter 5 Season 3
The Fortnite player count has dropped significantly since Chapter 5 Season 3 arrived. The new season introduced a very different style of play than has ever been in the game before, and so far, the early returns have not been great.
The new season put a focus on vehicles like never before, introducing mods for them and making them the go-to weapon for Chapter 5 Season 3. With several new items, this season is arguably the most unlike any other season before it. Epic Games took a big swing, and it has not paid off.

Fortnite Player Count Dipping
It seems that in both builds and Zero Builds, players are leaving quickly. The season began on May 24. By May 29, both modes were doing well. According to Fortnite.gg, regular build mode had almost 700,000 players. Zero Build was going strong with around 570,000. Now, those numbers are much lower. Builds has dropped to about 210,000. Zero Build sports 300,000.
By the same measure, the ranked mode for Fortnite has dropped as well, but it’s at a much slower rate. Builds ranked peaked at the end of May with almost 400,000 players and they are now at about 150,000. Zero Build ranked had a little over 60,000 players on May 29, but has dropped to about 30,000. Everyone’s leaving the game in droves it seems, but especially those who aren’t playing competitively.
Why are players leaving?
The images provided here tell a shocking story of a once-promising season that has unfortunately seen a bit of a mass exodus.
There are a lot of reasons for this. Many players returned for Fortnite OG and have persisted in their comeback through Chapter 5 despite it being so vastly different. It’s a much more complicated game now, and the steam they had from playing OG is running out every day. It doesn’t help that Chapter 5 Season 3 is also very unique. Cars weren’t even drivable for a long time, and now they’re an absolute necessity.
Epic Games tried to do something unique with this season. They deserve some credit for giving it a shot and trying to revitalize the player base with something totally new, but it seems to have backfired on them as the player count continues to spiral.
The XP nerf has a lot to do with it as well.
