Ominous Bottles and How To Get Them in Minecraft
Ominous Bottles are a brand-new item in Minecraft 1.21, and they’re completely reinventing how Raids and other content are done. The Bad Omen effect has been in the game since the 1.14 update. That introduced Pillagers and Raids, and the Bad Omen effect triggers a raid when in range of a village.
The Bad Omen effect, thanks to the update, has another use now and it comes from Ominous Bottles. Here’s what you need to know:

How to Get Ominous Bottles in Minecraft 1.21
Minecraft 1.21 brought some new features. Ominous Bottles are dropped by Pillager captains, the hostile mob with an Ominous Banner on its head. These can be found in one of two places. First, if you see a Pillager Outpost, a captain will spawn there eventually. You may have to wait and kill other Pillagers, but a captain will spawn sooner rather than later. Once you do, it will drop the banner and the Ominous Bottle. In order to get multiple Ominous Bottles, you have to kill multiple Pillager captains.
Trial Omen
The Trial Omen effect is Bad Omen when used in a Trial Chamber. This brand-new structure also debuted in the 1.21 update. It is marked by Tuff blocks and Copper, so you’ll know if you find one. These are very rare structures, though. The only way to ensure finding one is to purchase a map for it from a Cartographer. The Bad Omen effect triggers a Minecraft raid when in the vicinity of a village, but what does it do for the new Trial Chamber?
Ominous Trial Spawner
The Trial Omen effect changes everything about a Trial Spawner. It triggers when you are within 14 blocks of a Trial Spawner within the chamber. The Spawner changes to an Ominous Trial Spawner, which changes the mobs it spawns and more. The mobs that spawn will be armored more often and more difficult to fight. In turn, the rewards will be better as well. This gives the Spawner a chance to drop the Ominous Vault Key instead of a normal Trial Key.
The Trial Key is vital to unlocking the Vault within the Trial Chamber. It is fun to go fight the Breeze and Bogged mobs that largely only spawn in these chambers, but the main reason anyone goes to a Trial Chamber is for the loot. Since the normal Trial Key opens a vault, what does the Ominous Vault Key do?
Ominous Vault
When you trigger the Trial Omen effect, the entire structure changes. Not only do the spawners change, but the vault does, too. It begins as a normal Vault with good loot. When it morphs into an Ominous Vault, the loot gets even better. Here’s what you can get out of the Ominous Vault:
- Emerald (54.9%)
- Wind Charge (46.2%)
- Arrow of Slowness IV (36.4%)
- Diamond (25.5%)
- Nothing (25%)
- Flow Armor Trim Smithing Template (22.5%)
- Enchanted Golden Apple (22.5%)
- Block of Emerald (18.2%)
- Flow Banner Pattern (15%)
- Ominous Bottle III (13.4%)
- Enchanted Crossbow (12.1%)
- Block of Iron (12.1%)
- Golden Apple (12.1%)
- Enchanted Diamond Axe (9.1%)
- Enchanted Diamond Chestplate (9.1%)
- Music Disc: Creator (7.5%)
- Heavy Core (7.5%)
- Enchanted Book (6.1%)
- Block of Diamond (0.8%)
Some of the loot you can get here is extremely valuable. Other items, like the Heavy Core, are extremely rare. The Heavy Core is the only way to craft a mace, and this is the only place players can obtain it from.
If you don’t turn it into an Ominous Vault, it will still have good loot:
- Nothing (75%)
- Emerald (39.6%)
- Arrow (34.6%)
- Arrow of Poison (34.6%)
- Iron Ingot (26.9%)
- Honey Bottle (26.9%)
- Ominous Bottle I (18.6%)
- Damaged Shield (10.9%)
- Enchanted Bow (10.9%)
- Golden Apple (10.7%)
- Wind Charge (9.6%)
- Diamond (9.6%)
- Golden Carrot (7.3%)
- Enchanted Book (7.3%)
- Enchanted Crossbow (7.3%)
- Enchanted Iron Axe (7.3%)
- Enchanted Iron Chestplate (7.3%)
- Bolt Armor Trim Smithing Template (5.4%)
- Enchanted Diamond Axe (3.6%)
- Enchanted Diamond Chestplate (3.6%)
- Music Disc: Precipice (3.6%)
- Trident (1.8%)
The loot can still be really good, but it is definitely in your best interest to turn it into an Ominous Vault if you can.
