Karmine Corp not going to EU Masters is actually positive for the scene

After an underwhelming LFL season, three-time champions Karmine Corp have crashed out of the Summer Split. They lost 1-3 to Gameward on Thursday and were eliminated in the very first round of the Playoffs. They were champions of the European Masters this past spring, but have now failed to qualify for the Summer Edition.

The last three editions of the LFL have seen Karmine Corp dominating the circuit. In 2021 they topped the split rankings across both seasons. KC won the title in spring and were runners-up in summer. In the spring split this year, they finished second on the standings but were eliminated by Team BDS Academy 3-1 in the playoffs. They’ve even won the European Masters with a three-peat since making their LFL debut.

Fall from grace, and a shift in power

Considering KC’s reputation as one of France’s most formidable League of Legends teams, their fall from grace this summer has been nothing short of baffling. They looked absolutely dominant in Spring, and they started Summer looking like nothing could stop them. During the first three weeks of the season, they five out of their first six games and coasted to the top of the standings.

But then began the start of their slow, steady decline. They would win only four of their next 12 games, succumbing to one hapless defeat after the next. Perhaps the lowest point of their season was when they went down in the fifth week to the permanently bottom ranked Team Oplon. KC could manage only eight kills in that game while Team Oplon dealt them 16 deaths, and though they prolonged the game to over 35 minutes, they would still suffer a humiliating, morale crushing defeat.

This is reflected by their overall kill to death metric, an uninspiring 0.89. They have been dealt some heavy blows this season, and they’ve suffered 14.4 deaths per game, the fourth worst among teams, while taking only 12.2 kills per game. Their damage per minute rate of 2329 is excellent, and at least in this metric they’ve outmatched the rest, but this incautious approach has cost them dearly.

While KC may have undermentioned, we also have to note the growth fellow LFL competitors showed. LDLC, BDS and Vitality.Bee really elevated their game and made KCorp look silly in the rematches.

EU Masters will get a fresh new champion

If KCorp even barely made it to EU Masters Summer they would be considered favorites. This time is a whole different level when they play domestically and on the international stage. To that end, bowing out of Playoffs was maybe the best thing that could happen for other European leagues. Four in a row would set a precedent and an almost unbeatable record. This way we at least get a sense of competition at this event.

Make no mistake, I fully expect LFL teams to once again dominate the competition. But we will at least get a new champion at the end of it all.
