Krafton esports director Karan Pathak talks BGIS Hyderabad LAN, hackers, and more
The BGMI India Series (BGIS) is set to happen in Hyderabad from June 28 to 30. It will be a three-day tournament in which the best BGMI esports teams in the region will face off against each other. The build-up to this tournament has been unlike most tournaments in the country. In this article, we look at some techniques and methods used by Krafton India, with Karan Pathak, the Associate Director Esports of Krafton India, sharing his thoughts on the BGIS.

In the last few years, Hyderabad has become another IT hub. Google and Microsoft have offices in the city. In the past, many events related to Indian esports have taken place within this city. Last year, the Indian Game Developers Conference (IDGC) took place. This year, BGIS 2024 is happening at the Hitex Exhibition Center in the city with an expected crowd of over 3,000 fans.
“The decision to host the BGIS LAN event in Hyderabad was strategic. Hosting the event at the Hitex Exhibition Center aligns with our vision for the year 2024. The city’s vibrant community and growing status as an esports hub make it an ideal choice.” stated Karan Pathak, Associate Director Esports of Krafton India.
In a unique collaboration, Krafton India collaborated with the Hyderabad police. This was done using ads featuring in-game characters to promote road safety within the city. The in-game ideal of a level 3 helmet was used to ask bike drivers to wear helmets while driving. Another form of marketing came from the metro being used to promote the event.

Last year, the BGIS 2023 took place in Mumbai. Days 1 and 2 were ideal, with no technical issues. Day 3, however, faced security issues with overcrowding and a stampede-like situation at the venue. Due to this, fans and players’ families couldn’t attend the event. This year, however, Krafton is much better prepared.
“We have worked closely with local authorities to develop traffic management plans, emergency response protocols, and security measures tailored to the event’s needs,” said Pathak. “We aim to ensure that everyone involved, from players to fans, can enjoy the event without concerns for their well-being.”

One aspect of BGIS 2024, the central talking point, was the number of teams that received bans during the event. In the past, multiple allegations have been made against various teams for using unethical means in BGMI. This year, over 15 teams were disqualified from the event. Pathak commented on the high level of bans in this edition of the BGIS.
“We have enhanced our monitoring systems and have a dedicated team ensuring all participants adhere to the rules. The changes since last year include stricter enforcement of our Code of Conduct and the introduction of more rigorous vetting processes for participating teams. The teams that have been banned from the event faced immediate disqualification, and all their results from the tournament were nullified.”
During various rounds of the tournament, observing admins were sent to multiple team boot camps to ensure that there was no form of foul play. During week one of the semi-finals of BGIS The Grind, a team named Team Zero Recoil was disqualified from the event. This even resulted in some matches consisting of 15 teams instead of 16.
