As far as redesigns go, D.Va didn’t go through any huge changes in Overwatch 2 compared to other heroes. The most noticeable difference is that the colour scheme of her MEKA has a more vibrant colour palette. Instead of being completely covered in pink paint and sponsor stickers, it almost has a cyberpunk aspect with a mishmash of pink, white, and blue, a callback to the colour scheme of her OW1 pilot suit.

Speaking of the suit, it’s been given a much-deserved upgrade. Protective armor plates have been added, and her hair is now tied back in a ponytail – the only thing the designers did not touch was her signature pink face paint decals.

What Does D.Va Do? – Weapons, Abilities & Ultimate

Which weapons is D.Va equipped with?

D.Va is considered to be one of the most powerful Overwatch 2 tanks. Her primary weapon is her fusion cannons. They work best at short range and come with infinite ammo, so you don’t need to worry about reloading. D.Va’s movement is slowed while firing. It does 146 damage per second. While in pilot mode, her primary fire is her Light gun, a pistol with mid-range that does 50 damage per second.

What are D.Va’s abilities?

D.Va’s passive ability is her Eject:

  • Once her MEKA reaches 1 HP, instead of her character dying, she is ejected out of her MEKA as her health shifts from 650 to 150.
  • She can fend for herself with her Light Gun, gaining ult charge for each bullet hit.
  • Once her ult meter is fully charged, using the ult will summon a new MEKA for D.Va.

D.Va’s secondary ability is her Defense Matrix:

  • A forward-facing array, it acts as her shield. It can block any projectiles coming in her direction.
  • You can use it all at once for 3 seconds or sparingly.
  • If it’s fully depleted, it will take 6 seconds to charge back up fully.
  • You can move and turn while it is active. However, you won’t be able to block all incoming damage from, say an opponent that’s attacking from behind.

Her 1st alternate ability is her boosters:

  • Boosters are great for movement if you want to cover some ground much quicker than your other teammates and opponents, with a maximum range of almost 24 meters.
  • She can turn and change direction while it’s active, and you can knock/shove into enemies as well. It can also be used alongside her fusion cannons. It has a cooldown of 4 seconds.

D.va’s 2nd alternate ability is her micro missiles:

  • A volley of explosive rockets, she fires 11 rockets per second.
  • They deal up to 126 damage in total, 77 per second.
  • Think of it as a miniature version of Pharah’s ultimate.

What is D.Va’s Ultimate?

Her Ultimate ability is called Self Destruction/Call Mech. Self Destruct causes her MEKA to explode 3 seconds after D.Va ejects, dealing massive damage in an area. Call Mech requires less charge, allowing D.Va to call back her MEKA. If she can aim her positioning correctly, direct hits onto enemies deal 250 damage and knock other enemies around her away from her position.

Tips On How To Play D.Va In Overwatch 2

D.Va is not a new hero in Overwatch 2. Compared to the other characters, D.Va is very nimble, able to cover more ground. This lets her flank and hassle her opponents more easily, especially now with Overwatch 2, crowd control abilities have been immensely limited.

Here are two tips to keep in mind when playing D.Va:

  • Like Reinhardt, she does more damage at close range, so be prepared for a lot of ‘in-your-face’ combat. Her Boosters will come in handy to help get in and out of those close-quarter fights.
  • D.Va’s defense Matrix can block several enemy ultimates, such as Pharah’s Rocket Barrage, Cassidy’s High Noon, Zarya’s Graviton Surge, and Mei’s Blizzard, to name a few.

Try to save the matrix charge for such ultimates, but it also comes in handy to eat up additional damage-dealing abilities such as Moira’s damage orb or Ashe’s dynamite.

Hana Song, callsign “D.Va” reigns from Busan, South Korea. Hana grew up playing video games with her dad and was her inspiration to pursue professional gaming. After winning multiple tournaments and earning some fame, the 2nd Omnic Crisis dawned upon Busan’s shores. The South Korean Government created the MEKA squad to counter the Omnic advance and D.Va was chosen among them. She often streams their battles to her fans.

As the MEKA squad won more battles against the Omnics, the more pressure D.Va felt to perfect her skills. It almost cost her her life during the events of her cinematic short, “Shooting Star” as she realized it was okay to ask for help from her teammates. After the Overwatch team was recalled, MEKA squad responded to an Omnic attack within Busan, an Overwatch 2 map featured in the game, where the new strike team formed by Cassidy arrived to provide support. After the battle was won, Cassidy offered Hana a place in the newly recalled Overwatch, and she accepted.
