PUBG tops Dota2 as steam’s most popular game

PlayerUnknown’s Battle Grounds (PUBG), which officially launched on Steam on the 23rd of March, has for the first time taken Dota 2 over as the most played game.

Since release PUBG has constantly been hovering in the top four games alongside Dota 2 and CS:GO. However, while it has reached second place in terms of player count previously, it has never reached the top spot as the most popular Steam title, until now.

Will PUBG remain as Steam’s most popular game?

While the crown for Steam’s most popular game is quite volatile, it is believed that PUBG will experience a steady growth in players and as such we predict the title will compete the number one spot more often. Further adding to Vale Corporation’s woes, Dota 2 is quickly becoming a legacy title, while experiencing a reduced growth in players also – suggesting that esport’s largest game is slowly losing traction.

PUBG continues to gain popularity and has quickly gained the reputation of being the top multi-player survival shooter. This is demonstrated by the growth of PUBG streamers on Twitch, rapidly increasing the exposure of the FPS.

In addition, PUBG is still considered only to be in its early access phase. For PUBG to achieve number on status so soon, especially in its unfinished form, is extremely impressive – and worrying for leading titles such as Dota 2.

One sticking point for the new FPS is price point, with PUGB selling for $30, while Dota 2 remains free. Whether PUBG will lower its price to become more accessible is unknown. It may eventually form a freemium model, which has been successful for similar titles, such as the wacky FPS Team Fortress 2. As FT2 betting sites had success, we are sure bookmaker will start looking at PUBG with interest.

Event organisers are looking to increase involvement in PUBG’s competitive side, growing the game’s reach. For now, it is likely Dota 2 and PUBG will continue to exchange the number one spot, but whether PUBG will become the top dog on Steam in the future is anybody’s guess. It’s looking like an interesting time for esport fans though.
