The first Digimon Game hit shelves September 1998, with its most recent iteration, Digimon Survive, coming out worldwide July 2022 after 2 years of delays. Digimon World Games
The first of the main series to take off. The “World” series are connected mostly in name only, with Digimon World 1,2,3 and 4 having differing gameplay styles. The first focuses on fleshing out the Tamagotchi role-playing Virtual Pet origins that Digimon was made for. The second game is a dungeon crawler, the third an isometric traversal JRPG style turn based combat game that would become the predominant gameplay style of the Digimon Story games. And the 4th numbered game of the Digimon World games is a top down brawler that can be played with up to 4 players.
Tri-Crescendo’s Digimon World Re:Digitize. A modern take on the first game, allowed players to use 2 Digimon in the V-Pet style of before. Limited only to the PSP, the game would be rereleased as an enhanced port for 3DS (RE::Digitize Decode). For the Vita (Next Order) and home consoles in 2017, and again in 2023 for PC and Switch. Digimon World: Next Order (International Edition) is the most recent version of a Digimon World Game.

Digimon Story Series
The Story Games are a largely DS based games. However as of the Vita and eventual shift to PS4, Story games are now home console and PC games. These isometric titles feature series staple branching digivolution paths, comprehensive stories and side-questing like your standard JRPGs. The battle system of the DS games broke player and enemy zones broken into 5, with moves able to hit designated slots. Cyber Sleuth, in addition to departing from the DS, also introduced Japanese voice acting and use of 3D models.
The Story Games have a reputation for being grindy and a tad confusing to get into, but series fans often tend to overlook this as part of being in tune with the system. Being the most consistent of any of the series. Completing one Digimon Story game teaches you what you need to know for others. Confusingly, the first 3 Digimon Story games are titled Digimon World in the west.

Notable Examples that released in the west are the season 5 tie in “Digimon World Data Squad” and Digimon World Championship which doesn’t share gameplay with the Digimon World, or “Digimon World” Story games.
The last game of note is Digimon Survive, the most recent game in the franchise, which combined Visual Novel gameplay with a Fire Emblem-esque tactics battle system, albeit rudimentary.
Various spinoffs have been made for the Digimon series. Digimon Digital Card Battle is based on the original Digimon TCG. Digimon Masters is a free MMORPG in the Digimon Universe, and various fighting games in the Digimon Battle Spirit and Rumble Arena series have been released.
