Is Dead By Daylight Cross Platform?

First released in June 2016, Dead by Daylight is a survival horror asymmetric multiplayer online game developed by Behaviour Interactive. One player takes on the role of a killer, who attempts to catch and sacrifice the other four survivors before they can fix the generators and open the gates to escape. The game was first released for Microsoft Windows, later followed by additional releases for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android and Google Stadia in October 2020. Because the game is available on so many different platforms, fans want to know, is Dead by Daylight cross-platform?

Is Dead by Daylight Crossplay?

In August 2020, the developers released an update which made DBD cross-platform. This finally allowed players to play with their friends on other consoles, resulting in a larger number of people to play with/against, reducing queue times.

When we asked if Fortnite is cross-platform, we saw a perfect example of how game developers should introduce cross-play into their games to help grow their player base and make their games more successful. Behaviour Interactive has done a good job recreating this system. DBD crossplay is available on PC, Stadia, Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo Switch, making it accessible for almost all players.

Similarly to Apex Legends crossplay, DBD crossplay has one limitation: it is not currently possible to party up with mobile players. The mobile version of Dead by Daylight was released in April 2020. However, cross-platform with PC and console was not included in its release, and there has been no indication that this will ever be possible in the future. Despite this, mobile players on devices such as iOS and Android can still party up and play with each other.

How to add friends on Dead by Daylight cross platform?

Adding DBD cross-platform friends is extremely easy. When you are in a game, you first need to open the ‘friends tab’, select the ‘+’ icon and input your friends’ username. Then once they have accepted, you can invite them to your lobby.

DBD crossplay should be automatically enabled when you install the game. You can check this in your settings, in the ‘Online’ area of the ‘Options’ tab. If crossplay has been disabled, this is indicated by a small globe icon next to the ‘Searching for party...’ text when queuing. In some situations, players may want to only play with players on their platform. The DBD crossplay setting can be turned off by unchecking this same box.

Dead by Daylight Cross Progression

Despite DBD cross-platform being available for all platforms, Cross progression is not. The meaning of crossplay can sometimes be confused with cross-progression. Crossplay is the ability to play with other friends from different consoles, whilst cross-progression means that you can move your in-game progress between different platforms.

Cross-progression for Dead By Daylight is only available between Steam and Google Stadia platforms, so fans must wait until they can access their main account on different consoles.

To enable DBD cross-progression, players must link their Behavior Interactive account with their Steam or Google Stadia account. Once you’ve registered your account then, your progress and inventory (DLCs, skins, etc.) will be synchronised.

Note that Auric Cells are platform-specific and cannot be shared between the two platforms unless they were earned from Rift progression. Also, if you have purchased the same DLC on two different platforms, then you will not be refunded or gain any bonus when you merge your accounts.

Genshin Impact cross-progression is an example of where players can access the same account and progress across every platform. Behavior Interactive and other game developers will work on introducing systems like this into their games across all platforms.
