Is Smite Cross-Platform? Our Smite Crossplay Guide
Smite was created by the development team at Hi-Rez Studios. It was released officially on march 25th, 2014, for PC. It was later released on September 19, 2015 on Xbox One, 31st May, 2016 on Playstation 4, and most recently on Nintendo Switch on February 18th, 2019. Smite is a free-to-play MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game that is based on Gods and Goddesses from many different religions and mythologies. How Smite differentiates from League of Legends, and Dota, the two largest MOBA games, is that it is a 3rd person behind-back game where you have full control of movement and do not click to move.
In Smite, the game is 5v5, where you can choose from over 93 different Deities that can be both ranged and melee. These are classified as Assassin, Warrior, Guardian/Juggernaut (Tank), Mage, or support.
The map is split into 3 symmetrical lanes where you have 2 towers and a phoenix which you must destroy before reaching and killing the enemy titan, all while defending your titan. The three lanes are connected by what is described as the jungle. In the jungle, many buffs are to be gained, such as a red damage buff, a blue mana buff and a gold coin buff. As well as these, there are larger buffs such as the fire giant.
Why is Smite so Popular?
One of the many reasons Smite is so popular is its characters. A lot of people know some mythical gods such as Thor, Loki, Fenrir, Ganesh, Medusa, Anubis, Aphrodite, Ares. These are the more common gods, however, you get to learn about other deities that you may not have heard of before such as Ah Puch the Horrific God of Decay, or Awilix, Goddess of the moon. Smite has a very unique take on the MOBA genre and because of this has become a very successful game being able to compete along with games such as League of Legends and Dota 2. With Smite being so popular you might think of asking questions such as is Dota 2 dying? And the answer to this is no, not necessarily though dota may be slightly less popular than it previously was, but it is still thriving. With a game as popular as this begs the question, is Smite cross-platform? Smite also has a ranked mode, similar to the LoL ranking system where you can progress through the ranks playing its most played Conquest game mode.
Is Smite Cross-Platform?
Cross-platform is a function that allows a gamer on on platform to with gamers from other platforms. One of the main reasons people want to find out if Smite is cross-platform or not is because it is always nice to be able to play and enjoy the games you want to play with your friends. So, is smite cross-platform? Luckily for Smite players, this feature is available. Hi-Rez were smart and made Smite enable crossplay over 4 years ago and made it possible for PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch to play cross-platform. Along with this, players can continue their progression on whichever platform they feel like. Playstation players are left in the cold, though that has more to do with Sony themselves rather than Hi-Rez.
To enable cross-progression, all players need to do is link their Hi-Rez account with their Gamertags and everything will be set. How to enable crossplay? Though this feature is enabled by default for new players, if you do not want to mix the player pool and turn off crossplay, you can opt out of the feature with a simple toggle button in the menus. This, to me, makes Smite one of the best crossplay games you can play.
What is next for Smite?
The future for smite is bright, with Hi-Rez constantly adding new deities and the ever-changing maps and game modes such as Arena, a 5v5 game similar to team deathmatch where the goal it to just kill the other team, Joust similar to the main mode but its just 1 lane with a jungle and is 3v3.
