Top lane has been invigorated in the past two years. After being considered an island for various seasons, top lane has gained increasing importance and the new map changes make it even more difficult to punish these solo laners.
If you’re not sure what you should be playing in the top lane, though, don’t worry: here is our top lane tier list for Patch 25.08 .

If you’re serious about climbing this patch, Yorick, Gwen, and Fiora are top picks for solo carry games. These champions are incredible split-pushers with strong 1v1 potential. Fiora and Gwen scale well into the late game, and they can be pretty much unstoppable in the right hands. Yorick, on the other hand, focuses more on the early stages, looking for good trades in the first few minutes to snowball. Since the recent rework, Yorick is now all about pushing his advantage and creating immediate pressure up in the top lane. Overall, these champions are currently must-learn at all levels of play and they are usually close to pick-or-ban status. Playing these champions will heavily increase your chances of getting extra LPs.
Among the S-Tier champions, there are ones that can be played in most situations and others that really shine when it comes to counter picks. Aatrox and Mordekaiser are generally strong in most matchups, especially in the lower ends of the ranked ladder where their weaknesses are not exploited as much.
Rumble, Jax, and Riven, on the other hand, require a lot more mechanical proficiency and a strong understanding of specific matchups and lane management. Rumble is great due to his impact in teamfights with the ultimate and the high magic damage DPS, while Jax is an all-around pick for both split pushing and teamfighting. Riven is the best champion among the S-tier ones to solo carry games, but she’s also the least forgiving and the most mechanically demanding champion.
A-tier champions are technically close to the S-tier ones, depending on matchups and proficiency. Champions like Darius, Garen, and Sett are great champions for beginners looking to learn the fundamentals of the game with great melee-focused kits, while Jayce, Cassiopeia, and Teemo require a good knowledge on how to take advantage of ranged vs melee matchups.
Warwick, Urgot, and Renekton can be great carries while having bruiser-like capabilities to survive teamfights and avoid getting shut down. You can choose any of these champions and master it so you can always have a pick to default to in case the Z-Tier and S-Tier champions are banned or taken away.
The B-tier roster is filled with champions that can work, but often depend on the overall draft and the synergy with the rest of the team composition. Shen, Sion, and Cho’Gath offer utility and frontline presence, while Irelia, Akali, and Yone are high-risk, high-reward picks for mechanical players. In particular, Irelia has been popping up more often in the higher ends of the LoL ranking system but she is also extremely hard to master, and I would discourage people from playing her unless you’re willing to put a lot of time.
Champions like Vladimir and Kayle are great if you require late-game power, while Gragas and Illaoi are mainly considered counters based on the matchups. For example, Gragas counters Jax and other bruiser-like carries with dashes while Illaoi shreds through most melee champions.
These champions are currently not in a great spot, although you can still pick them depending on the situation or matchup. Champions like K’Sante and Kennen are technically better in organized team compositions with clear game plans, but they can often be punished in solo queue. Camille and Tryndamere can be strong split-pushers, but it requires the players to have good game sense and map awareness to know exactly when to apply pressure on the side lanes.
The champions in this tier are weak and out of meta. These can still have some value as counters but they are usually much stronger alternatives. With top lane being an important role to contest early game objectives and making the most out of the mid-game teamfights, these champions are either obsolete or do not bring enough value in the current patch.
