Unicorns of Love
Unicorns of Love and the EU LCS
Unicorns of Love is an LCS team that is a popular choice with fans of League of Legends, being well-established and having achieved great results over the past number of years. This LCS team (associated with the League of Legends Championship Series) is a European group based in Germany. UoL are recognized as a major team in the EU LCS and are known for being unpredictable when it comes to both game play and strategy. This puts their opponents at a disadvantage, although, it can sometimes lead to some inconsistencies.
Unicorns of Love: History of one of the EU LCS’s top teams
This LCS team first emerged onto the League of Legend scene in August 2013, before beginning their first competitive play in 2014. At the beginning of 2014, Unicorns of Love won quite a few GO4LoL competitions. As time went on, this LCS team began to play in more high profile events, including the Summer Black Monster Cup – in which they earned a respectable third place.
On 15th May 2014, Unicorns of Love adopted a new team member: PowerOfEvil. This player replaced Xodiaz in the Midlaner role, and helped the group to qualify for the Summer Series No.1 EUCS – although they faltered when it came to the quarter finals against Ninjas in Pyjamas. In the playoffs for Summer Series No.2, Unicorns of Love went on to defeat Ninjas in Pyjamas, a sign that their star was beginning to rise.
During the Spring Promotion tournament, the team defeated Millennium with a result of 3-2 – a move which allowed them to qualify for the 2015 LCS Spring Split. During this event, the LCS team impressed fans and industry experts alike with their innovative and skilled game-play. They beat Fnatic, Gambit Gaming and SK Gaming – a fantastic start to their illustrious League of Legends careers. Since then, the team has grown in skill and experience, and is now considered a major contender within the esports industry.
Unicorns of Love: How are they now?
The start of 2016 saw Unicorns of Love display little improvement, failing to defeat the better teams in the EU LCS, going 10:8 in the Regular Spring LCS season. While UoL remained fairly strong, they were unable to truly push through and enter the top tier ranks. Moving to the Spring Playoffs, Unicorns of Love were immediately decimated by Origin in a decisive 0-3 defeat in the best of five.
As a result of their poor performance in the playoffs, almost the entire team was switched out in favor of newer talent in-order to break their mid-tier shackles. Unfortunately, UoL finished worse off in the summer split, this time placing in sixth place. That said, they fared slightly better during playoffs, considering they were not eliminated straight away, before placing fourth for the Summer playoffs from a 1-3 loss to H2k.
Since they didn’t do too poorly in the playoffs, UoL kept half of their existing roster, bringing on Xerxe and Samux while Uby was sent as a sub. This lineup proved to be extremely successful, as they went on to take first place in the 2017 EU LCS Spring Regular Season, and came in as the runner-up in the finals of the Spring Playoffs, bested only by G2 Esports.
Regrettably, UoL’s decision to stick with their existing roster lead to a dip in performance in the Summer Split, as other teams had made further changes to improve. Unicorns of Love eventually finished 3rd-4th in the regular season and soon after, perished instantly in the playoffs to Misfits Gaming.
More recently, UoL switched out half of their team, heading into the 2018 EU LCS Spring Split with a handful of newer members. This proved to be an extremely poor call from the UoL management and coaching staff, with the new line-up succumbing to even the lowest of teams (like FC Schalke and Giants Gaming). Ultimately, this has placed Unicorns of Love last in the EU LCS regular season and for the first time ever since their founding, they failed to qualify for the Playoffs.
