Hyper Scape – Ubisoft’s New Battle Royale

The weekend saw Ubisoft host their first online presentation, Ubisoft Forward. This was a Livestream of announcements similar to the Nintendo Directs that a lot of publishers have been emulating since E3’s cancellation. This presentation was dominated by Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed. However, Ubisoft did announce a new Battle Royale game. Hyper Scape is a Battle Royale from the developer that has already gone into open beta, and it looks to be something a bit different.

Hyper Scape is a free-to-play Battle Royale game that anyone can get started with now. Like the other best Battle Royale games, 100 players drop in and compete to be the last one standing. The game is looking to compete with PUBG, Fortnite, Apex, and Warzone. While this might seem a lot of Battle Royales already out there, both PUBG and Warzone have become firmly established long after the battle Royale genre became crowded. So will Ubisoft’s Hyper Scape achieve similar success?

What is Hyper Scape?

Hyper Scape was announced in a polished trailer that put a lot of emphasis on the game’s background. People living in a futuristic world escaping to a VR realm of fantasy. In-game, the characters all partake in a Battle Royale game in VR. This is all just set dressing though, the main event is the game itself. The lore might be enough to make it stand out from the crowd, although it is hardly a new idea. The resemblance to Ready Player One is pretty jarring.

Hyper Scape is an ambitious sci-fi take on the genre. Its first map is a futuristic city called Neo Arcadia. This makes the whole place look pretty different to other games. The gameplay itself is similar to what you already know. However, the vastly different architecture will necessarily make the game’s tactics different to the others out there.

The game has a Solo mode where a single player competes out of 100. A three-player squad game is also available, called Crown Rush Squad. LTMs will be making an appearance too, Hack Runner Squad and Turbo Mode Squad are the first too.  The game also features a free 30-tier Battle Pass. This will presumably progress to a paid one on a wider release.

Can You Play Hyper Scape ?

Hyper Scape has entered an Open Beta as a free-to-play game, so you can play it. Or at least you can in certain regions and platforms. Hyper Scape will be available in North America and Europe right now. This will be expanded as the game leaves this initial testing phase. It is also expected to come to PS4 and Xbox One this summer as the game becomes more polished.

Hyper Scape will be hoping to become one of those heavily streamed games like Fortnite or Warzone. It is even including some in-depth Twitch-integration. Players will be able to join streamers right from the twitch chat, and vote on events to take place in-game while watching.

If you’re in the right regions, you can launch in Hyper Scape to try it out for yourself. A Creator’s Cup competitive event is also taking place on the next three Fridays. However, this isn’t an event for pros or fans. Instead, creators of the game will be competing for a share of a prize pool. This is an odd choice, but we’ll have to wait and see if it helps hyper Scape develop a competitive community.
